Finally, it has been 2 and a half long years since the release of the PS3, but why has it taken so long to get Cricket on the games console again?!
Brian Lara Cricket on PS1 was arguably one of the best sporting sims around in its day because of its realism and gameplay. Two things which I believe Ashes 2009 is not too hot on.
The graphics and movement of players (Ok) Replays (Average) Extras e.g. Hawkeye (Good but overused). But I'm talking about 'real' realism! I like names, faces. They have the licenses for Eng/Aus which yes is what the Ashes is about but my first game against South Africa saw a quick fire 50 by H.Gabbs and a 3-for for M.Mokrel...
Also bowlers like James Anderson are rated as Med-Fast and can only reach top speeds of 78mph or so. And of course you can edit other countries but not Eng or Aus. Rubbish I'm afraid. Not accurate enough.
It's this lack of realism that slightly puts me off. I might just be being picky!
In terms of gameplay, its very fun to play, bowling and batting selection is good, you can now push for a quick single in a gap as opposed to purposely mistiming a shot to do so in older games. But the shots are still snatchy.
I'm happy they've recalled legends mode and the ability to live out great Ashes moments.
Overall this game came out promising a century, and was disappointingly caught behind for 45.
