inFamous

inFamous is an action-adventure game for the PS3, developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony. The game is set in a free-roaming world where you play as Cole Macgrath, a bike messenger who one day delivers a package that will change his life forever. Unbeknown to him, the package Cole delivers contains a bomb which causes a huge explosion that rips through 6 blocks of Empire City. Cole survives but mysteriously develops electricity-based super powers. As the city falls into chaos under the rule of gangs and criminals, you must decide between being a hero or an anti-hero - how you use your powers is up to you!

This game is simply excellent and a must buy for PS3 owners. The game plays like a third person shooter with immense freedom (imagine gears of war but not moving like a turtle, and actually be able to climb up on things). You're able to scale any building, jump from rooftop to rooftop, and later in the game hover longer distances. The superpowers play out like standard weapons - you've got your pistol/pulserifle like weapon, your sniper and your rocket launcher. These all come in the form of electricity based powers, and they are a pure pleasure to watch.

The graphics first appear disappointing at the intro cut scene, but once you get into the game it will not be an issue. The city looks brilliant, and the character models look good enough at a distance. Cole himself is definitely the best modelled character close up, which seems natural considering how much time you'll have him on screen.

The best bit about this game is the storytelling. You get some amount of story in game, but the most pleasurable thing to watch is the comic book style cut scenes. These look gorgeous in HD, and as the voice acting is pretty entertaining (even if it can be a tad cheesy at times, this is a good thing... this is a comic book game after all). The story is engaging and you will want to find out what is going on - and the ending will not disappoint. Some people complain that it is just one big origin story - well, what is wrong with that? When you watched Spider-Man 1 in cinema, you still loved it more than Spider-Man 3 - even though it was "only an origin story".

The story is great. The game is great. The gameplay is fun. Now go buy it.

Graphics...For an open world game of this size I was quite surprised to see the graphics being as sharp and detailed as they are, and then topped off with a fantastic draw distance. The game starts off pretty dark and gloomy but that's because the power has been cut off from the world. Once you start generating power to the city you will start to notice street lights being lit up, LCD displays, and random television sets giving you latest breaking news. The game features both a day and night cycle as well. Playing at night looks pretty cool because the electricity that flows from your body lightens up the darkness like the fourth of July. The character models look pretty good but they do lack in detail. I would have liked to see the same amount of detail in the rest of the world as I see in the main character and the enemies...Weapons... There are weapons in the game that you most likely have never seen before. All of the weapons have something to do with electricity. No guns, no knives, just raw electric power. Now how you use this electricity is that makes the game so great. Electric burst will send your enemies, vehicles and pedestrians flying through the air. While airborne you can shoot them with a straight blast of electricity or try to be slick and toss a sticky grenade on them while they are in the air. The stick bomb is a ball of electricity that explodes. One of my favourite ways to kill enemies is to climb onto the roof of a building, jump off and stomp the ground with an electric force that launches everything around you in the air. Another nice weapon is the Gigawatt Blades (note this weapon is a gamestop USA exclusive, my friend shared it with me). These blades are made u of electricity and hang over your arms similar to Wolverine. One swipe with these bladed and its nice knowing ya!...Gameplay...You can climb up nearly everything in the game. The controls are all very fluid and your actions are very easy to control...There seem to be 3 large cities to unlock. Each city is filled with side missions, electric shards, and drop zones. The electric shards you find will eventually increase your voltage meter. Increasing your meter will allow you to do more damage longer. Drop zones are basically you finding small satellite dishes scattered throughout to the cities rooftop. The more side missions you do the easier the game becomes. This is because every time you do a side mission you secure a certain are area in the city which enemies will not return to once you defeat them... During the game you will be faced with choices. These choices will determine whether you are a good guy or a bad guy. The people will react to you differently pending on your status. If you are good, they will embrace you and cheer you on. They will even run up to you asking for help. If you are bad you may find angry mobs chasing after you or they will just run away from you screaming. There are some missions that require you to be bad. So you may want to play through the game as a good guy first, and then bad the next time. Or vice versa...You will be earning karma with every deed you do. Good or bad will earn karma which moves you closer to being a Hero, or being inFAMOUS. Some of the deeds are healing wounded people, restraining enemies, and bio leeching will always net you bad karma though. These will also net you experience points (XP). With the acquired XP you get from missions and deeds you can purchase or upgrade your power/abilities...Sound... All of the electrifying explosions and environment noises sound great; from the distance screams for help, to the car that exploded in front of your face. A nice bit of music kicks in when enemies are about to attack which is nice because it gets you ready for whatever is coming...The voice acting is all really good but some of the dialogue is cheesy. I would have liked to hear more swearing and such but it's not anything that I can't live without...Overall...This game is very large and will keep you busy for quite a while. With the options to be both good and evil, the replay value jumps up even higher. The lack of stats sucks pretty badly but that's just a small price to pay for this very well designed game. There are many trophies to unlock. If you own a PS3 then you should own this game.
