Ghostbusters

Usually video game tie-ins are released at the same time as the movie they''re based on. Sometimes there can be short delay--but twenty years is something else. Ghostbusters never seems to age, though, with the new game a real labour of love for the developer. Not all of the ghosts and locations will be recognisable from the movie Some ghosts need to be destroyed--not caught Getting slimed is all part of the fun when you''re a Ghostbuster The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is back for revenge The game features an all new storyline but still manages to replicate most of the major scenes from the films, including the hotel-room capture of New York library ghost, Slimer, and the attack of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Almost all of the original cast are involved, including...

If there's something strange... in the neighbourhood who you gonna call.... well this time round it certainly isn't He-man! Looking back through generations of videogames based off blockbuster movies there's no surprise that everyone was predicting a disaster when they heard Ghostbusters: The Videogame was coming to the current generation of consoles. That being said everyone can relax, admit their predictions were wrong because this game lives up to its classic film predecessors. The game introduces a new rookie to the original Ghostbusting team, the new rookie being YOU and well it actually makes you feel like a Ghostbuster, which all in all is pretty satisfying to say the least. The story is written by the original Ghostbusters writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis who also feature as voices in the game for Dr Raymond Stantz and Dr Egon Spengler. Dan Aykroyd has actually been quoted saying "The game is like the 3rd Ghostbuster film" and I have to say it doesn't disappoint. The game itself has a story that lives up to the movies high standard in both fun and comedy. Bill Murray returns as Dr Peter Venkman while Ernie Hudson also returns to feature the part of Winston Zeddmore... that being said all the original fantastic four are back, which makes the game officially true to the Ghostbusters films. The game also re-introduces 'the green machine' Slimer himself, the 'Staypuff' Marshmallow Man and good friend of Dr Venkmans, Walter Peck. You may now be asking how does the Marshmallow Man re-appear, well you will have to play the game to find out as I don't want to give away any spoilers due to the great story the game features. I can say however that the story does match those of the film and if you enjoyed the movies you will most likely be impressed and overjoyed with the games story as well. The story stays true to its humour and has on par comedy moments like the movies.... " Hey where do these stairs go." .... "They go up." The gameplay is well put together not only do you get to bust ghosts in a fun and satisfying way, but you get to be a guinea pig for Egon (Harold Ramis) to try out new never seen before proton packs. That being said Venkman thinks it would be a "good idea" if you don't get to know the team in case Egons experimental packs go wrong. This makes the character you play very silent throughout the game whilst listening in on the other characters and the plot line... it's actually a good thing because the voice acting is top class! The only negative thing around this topic is the sync of characters voices with the character animation don't always go together and can be a second apart unfortunately this is one of the rare down points about the game. The music score is true to the movies and there's a possible opinion from some people that the game plays the theme song maybe a little bit too much throughout the game. It does happen to be a classic song in my opinion and if you think the same it will only add to a more ghost busting mood. The graphics side of things are impressive other than the audio sync of characters voices the animation is beautiful and the proton packs have been produced in great detail even the experimental packs have impressive detail throughout the game. The environment in the game is all destructive, much like the films and the proton pack doesn't let down in the destructive sense, remember "don't cross the beams". It is however best to keep the damage to a minimum as at the end of every level you will have money deducted for the damage you cause. This money is used to upgrade your proton packs more powerful or to last longer before they overheat, which only adds more replayability to the game. The gameplay itself is really fun and makes you actually feel like your try to capture a ghost from trying to drain it down and hold it over the trap for it to be captured, this isn't the hardest thing but it lives up to expectation and involves similar experiences from the original film. Think of the hotels ballroom with Slimer in the 1st film and you will get the sense of how things work in the game. It also add's little puzzles throught the game as you have to search for the objective and you get many gadgets that help you find hidden collectables each of the levels, which again only increases the replay factor. I think this would be a good time to mention its authentic side of the game as the vehicle and the garage can be explored at some point in the game.... it really does make you feel like you're looking around the office and is a mirror image of what is in the movie, that said it adds more realism to the game. The multiplayer side of the game is only online and there is no co-op mode through the story, it's more like a pick your mission and work together capturing a ghoul. You can play up to 4 people in the same room and it can be fun, addictive and hilarious! Truthfully it's a great experience and feels true to the movies. The only thing missing would be a possible versus mode 4 Ghostbusters v 4 Ghosts, but maybe this would have been asking too much as the game is easily going to compete with the bigger names on the market at this moment in time. Overall the game is a fun and pleasurable experience, I would recommend to any fan and even the people that haven't seen the movies will appreciate the game in my opinion. It simply is addictive and fun to play. With the genuine voices and only negative being the voice sync it simply does live to expectation of a Ghostbusters 3! Soooo if there is something strange in your neighbourhood, who you going to call? 100% the Ghostbusters as there back and back with a bang! 8.9/10
