Ah yes, Borderlands. The game that is equal parts fun AND crazy. Setting itself in the glorious wasteland of Pandora, this RPS (Role Playing Shooter) does something few games manage to achieve: it has character! After picking from one of four different character classes, you are thrust into the beginnings of a wild adventure to hunt down an elusive alien "vault" that promises riches and power to those that find it. Borderlands' story, while somewhat muddled, is never too boring. From the moment you begin, you will be completing a large variety of main quests and side quests that take you to many different locations. My advice? Just play the game for what it is, a lengthy romp around a wasteland filled with guns and enemies. Don't get too bogged down with the details: enjoy the ride!

Now gameplay is really where Borderlands shines. Being a first person shooter with rpg elements, what we have here is a curious mix of shooting all the bad guys AND becoming stronger and stronger over time. Enemies will adjust their own levels to match yours throughout the game, so there is an ever present, but not insurmountable challenge. What will really surprise you is the variety of weapons and other items that can be found in the game. The creators of Borderlands have implemented an amazing system whereby loot (guns, ammo, shields etc) is randomly generated across the environment of Pandora. What this means is there you will never, EVER find exactly the same item or gun twice. There is literally an endless amount of loot to be found, which is exactly why this game is so compelling. Levelling up and guns aside, there are many fun quests in this game that introduce other elements to be explored, such as driving and using your "action skill". What I mean by this is that each character class has their own unique skill that they can use. This can range all the way from invisibility to laying down a gun turret! With this in use (and being able to level them up!) action is always fun and varied. As well as amazing environments, glorious weapons and fun quests, the game does sometimes present something of a challenge. Fear not though, my review-reading buddies! For when you are killed you have one last chance to revive yourself by killing an enemy before you "bleed out". Even if you do happen to die, you get revived at the last checkpoint you past, minus about 10% of your total money. Not to worry though, the real challenge of the game presents itself in the form of the bosses and mini-bosses scattered throughout Pandora! Furthermore, when you have fully exhausted the game from start to finish, you have the option of playing through it again on a much harder difficulty, but also with much more powerful loot to find AND keeping all of your hard earned cash and weapons as well!

Want to know something more amazing about this game? IT HAS CO-OP! Yes, you can indeed do all of the things you would normally do alone in this game, with up to 3 other friends to join you. It even has a split-screen function for 2 players on one TV. You can complete all of the same quests together, share loot, fight each other to the death, revive each other when killed and even tackle huge bosses together. When you are playing with others in Borderlands, the game ups the challenge just a little bit to match the greater firepower and coordination you and your friends will bring along. Playing with friends in tow is great since the wasteland is a dangerous and lonely place for you to explore all by yourself.

While playing Borderlands, you may notice that the graphics and sounds are simply amazing. Visuals stand out thanks to their unique cell-shaded feel that oozes character and charm. Likewise, the music and ambient sounds are what help make the atmosphere so amazing in this game. While some may find the "comic-style" look a bit off-putting, I find it works well with the themes of the game.
Now since this is the Game of the Year edition of Borderlands, it comes packaged with all of the fantastic DLC that was release for the game after it came out. Having only played the Knoxx dlc (seeing as it reviewed the best) I can fully recommend getting this version simply because it includes that and all of the other DLC as well. Having spoken to my pals about the DLC in general before this review, they say that the other DLC is great as well, bringing new environments and enemies to find and kill. While I have not played the others myself, the money saved from buying them altogether like this warrants the purchase all by itself.

I can safely say that after playing over 200 hours into this amazing game, it is one of my all-time favourites. It is one of those things that can keep dragging you back in even after you have completed it already. But remember, this game is rated 18+ in the UK and contains lots of blood and violence that may not appeal to every gamer out there. If you do decide to buy this game, prepare for long nights of playing!! Enjoy ?
