As soon as Bioshock 2 was announced,
I was terrified for many reasons. First of
all there was the meeting between old
and new. The team that created the masterpiece
that was the first Bioshock was
    replaced by new developers, though
there were still a few members from the
    previous installation.
Secondly, there was the inclusion of
an online multiplayer mode. I had no
idea whether it would offer anything
new, or whether it would do the same
usual thing as other games in its genre
    but do it badly.
So does this offering to the gaming
    world disappoint?
    Not at all.
I hate to sound cliché but if you happen
to be someone who is into violent
first person shooters, then the game really
seems to have something to offer for
every kind of player out there. If you're
the kind of person who gets excited by
plot driven stories, then the game delivers
just that, and admirably. Just as in
the first game there's plenty for you to
think about; plenty of moral quandaries
are thrown at you, forcing the player to
make more and more difficult decisions
which effect how the plot of the game
    pans out.
But if you're playing the game for
the sake of playing, that's absolutely
fine too. The mechanics have been finetuned
since the original, and the game
is far from being a chore to play, with
plenty of surprises thrown your way to
keep things fresh and exciting. Trying
to defend yourself from a mutant in a
    party dress never gets old.
The only thing that I would say is
that if you've played the first game in
the series, then you might not get the
same feeling of awe and wonder as you
probably experienced before. I know I
didn't. I was amazed by the world I was
introduced to in the first game. It wasn't
like anything I had ever seen before,
and it made the game seem more surprising,
    and the world more mysterious.
Since we're visiting the world again for
a second time, there's none of that mystery
that I've come to associate with the
    first game.
But the graphics are simply gorgeous,
the music and sound effects lend themselves
    well to building an atmosphere
that will do a very good job of giving
    you the chills.
Another annoying niggle is that the
    main antagonist is somewhat lacking
when compared to the original game but
this is later improved as the plot draws
on. Unfortunately, while it's a minor
drawback, I feel that the plot is not as
meaningful as that of the first, though it
    is equally as interesting.
The online multiplayer mode is pretty
functional. While it does everything it's
meant to do, there's nothing that really
makes it stand out from other games. It
won't be rising to the top of popularity
charts any time soon, but there's enough
there to make it a fun experience.
The game is rated 18 for a reason; as
with any game that includes guns, there
is unsurprisingly a lot of violence and
blood, and there are horror elements to
the game too; so I wouldn't recommend
this to anybody who considers themselves
    faint-hearted.
In summary then, Bioshock 2 is a
game that delivers in all of the right
    places, with enough enhancements to
really make this a sequel that's worth
playing, minus the surprises and an antagonist
    with charisma.
