This game comes from the same people who gave us those awesome Star Wars: Battlefront games all those years ago, where the huge battles with vehicles, lasers and Jedi's captured everyone's minds and pushed the consoles of the time to the limits with the great graphics.

This game is not Star Wars: Battlefront, nor should it be. However it fails in many places, but is helped with our love for all things Tolkein. In this game you're thrown into the heat of battle and take part in all the key battles from the films and even a few that were not in the books. There are four classes to choose from, this is a good mix of melee, magic, stealth and ranged. This variation definitely keeps the game interesting for the most part, although it can get tiresome to constantly play and fight the same type of enemy classes.

There are two main issues most people have with the game, the first are the graphics. The character models generally look good and in some places the location you fight in can be easy on the eye, but all background graphics (such as soldiers fighting) are so very poor, it takes you out from the world you are playing and makes you realise, it's just not good enough for modern consoles to have this. The second issue are the numbers of soldiers and respawn rate, in some cases, maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the whole game you are given a large battle with a good number of soldiers, however for the most part you have anything from 3 to 10 on your side and this just isn't enough to capture the magic and epicenes of the battles you are participating in, it again does not do LOTR justice and you would expect much more in a modern game - look how many soldiers are in the Viking - Battle For Asgard battle's - it is truly epic.

There are some good features, it combines movie clips and a voice over and keeps you aware of the story and how it is progressing like the old action games did. You are given opportunities to play as many heroes from both sides in great moments throughout the game, this includes heroes like Gimli, Aragon, Legolas, Gandalf, The Eye of Sauron, The Balrog and even Sauron himself! It is certainly something that needs to be experienced when you are setting fire to the shire as the balrog and killing hordes of hobbits. Online is something that will give the game a bit more life and can be fun roaming around in trolls bashing your friend's heads against the floor, although there are some issues with lag usually.

Overall this game is really not polished up to the standards that it should be, that would make it such a great game, it has a few graphic glitches and some minor bugs and it really lacks an "epic" feeling. But despite this, if you are any sort of LOTR fan and enjoy action games then this is definitely something you should try - just wait for the price to go down.
