Captain America: Super Soldier Xbox 360 Review
This summer has truly been the summer of superheroes. With the releases of such blockbuster films as 'Marvel Avengers Assemble", "The Amazing Spider-man" and just last week "The Dark Knight Rises"; this summer is set to be the most action packed and enjoyable one for many years. With that in mind I really wanted to get into the right mood and learn more about the superheroes that would be appearing on our screens, and so decided to buy the Captain America film tie-in game; Captain America: Super Soldier.
Going into this game I had my doubts as to whether this game would be worth anywhere near the money I paid for it, as movie games tend to be anything but excellent. However to my grateful surprise, this game is actually not half bad, and in my opinion is one of the best movie-game adaptations in recent years.
The story is set in the middle of WW2 and in the backdrop of the Bavarian mountains in Germany. Here, Hydra; led by Dr Zola and The Red Skull, have set up their facilities in a castle deep within the mountains, and are on the brink of discovering human immortality. It is Captain America's job to now stop Hydra and thus stopping Germany from winning the war. I found the story to be very interesting with plot twists aplenty, and although it does not follow the story of the film, I was very glad to see that actors; Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell reprise their roles from the films. This added a much needed character to the game as many of the other characters that you will see in the game are quite generic and repetitive in style.
Gameplay is arguably the most enjoyable part of Captain America: Super Soldier and will most probably keep you interested in playing the game for the 8-10 hour single player campaign. You play as the titular character; Captain America, as you battle to defeat Dr Zola and his evil Hydra army. Unfortunately, although the Red Skull does appear briefly in the game, he does not play a prominent role within the story; and is there to simply remind us that we will be seeing him again in the film. I found this incredibly annoying as Cap's main enemy has always been The Red Skull. This wouldn't have been a problem had the developers of the game implemented a different main antagonist who actually appeared evil and could put up a fight. Sadly however, the player has to put up with facing off against the seeming weak and pathetic Dr Zola, and this was a little bit of a disappointment. Thankfully on the other hand, gameplay is intensely exciting and borrows more than one idea from the "Batman: Arkham" series. This though did not bother me, as if the game was going to steal from another franchise; at least it stole from the very best.
Playing as Captain America you will be dealing with your enemies with a great free-flowing combat system that enables you to block, dodge, counter and vault over your enemies. This is complemented well with the ability to punch your foes with your fists as well as your mighty shield. This is where is "Super Soldier" differentiates its combat system from other games in the genre and breaks away from the typical fighting experience we've come to expect. You can throw your shield at your enemies to stun them and then finish them off with one last slam from your fists. The game's combat is exciting both to watch and to play, delivering the game's most solid feature well, with little faults or glitches. The game also incorporates an idea that I'd like to see present in other games in the genre. As you fight, dodge and block with your shield, your focus meter fills. When full this will allow you to defeat your opponent with one strike of your fist or shield. I absolutely loved this component and the fact that it was shown in slow motion every time it occurred made it look awesome.
Along with combat, Cap will also be participating in many platforming sections throughout the course of the game. Although these may appear great to look at, with Captain America athletically jumping and flipping through the air and vaulting over poles, it only really boils down to the player pressing "A" at the right moment. I felt that this could have been altered to make it a lot more enjoyable to do. I would have loved to be actually getting a sense of how it felt to be jumping through the air and the rush of vertigo as Cap front flipped, and landed as elegantly as a bald eagle. However, instead we get a boring, uninspiring, mundane action that is tiring to both do and watch. I was really disappointed by this whilst playing the game.
For the most part of the game you play within close proximity of Dr Zola's castle, strolling from time to time throughout the village that surrounds it. However as you progress through the storyline you will visit battlegrounds, underground prisons, mazes and sewers. This all adds up to a variety of different locations and it entertained me to see where I would end up next. I also really liked the fact that the areas you visit are very expansive and free to explore at any time during your play-through. The whole map is yours to traverse and could be considered as an open-world experience, as you can go anywhere at any time.
Although there may be a lot of locations to visit, textures are often murky and take a long while to load properly. However this didn't really matter to me that much as I was just having too much of a blast playing this game to care. As previously explained many of the cast from the film also appear in the game and I was really happy to have them there in this interesting story. Voice work is very well done due to this, as the actors fit perfectly into the characters that they play in the movie. My only real gripe is to do with enemy variation. More often than not you will be fighting the same three types of enemies through the whole game. This did cause me to get a little bored at times as I felt I was doing the same thing time and time again. I would have appreciated a more diverse range of enemy groups as there is only so much of one enemy I can take without becoming uninterested. Thankfully though boss battles do add a much needed dose of alteration to the enemies and the final boss battle is extremely awesome.
To conclude, it is clear that this game was made on a budget, and a small one at that. However I hope that, that won't keep people from buying this game, as past its rough edges there is a game that is immensely enjoyable. It was a nice surprise to see the actors from the film reprise their roles and by doing so made the game feel more complete. Acrobatic, fast-paced free-flowing combat is the game's shining feature and had me wanting to play the challenge modes after I had completed the main story. I now hope that a game developer, with a bigger budget and more time will go on from this and create a Captain America game that builds upon this game's foundations. This was a great way to get into the superhero feel of this summer and hopefully this will not be the last game that delivers a solid superhero adventure that was really enjoyable to play. Go ahead and try this one out, as you can't go wrong with a little bit of superhero action!
