Red Faction Guerrilla

Red Faction Guerrilla is the highly-anticipated open world 3rd person shooter from THQ and Volition, set 50 years after the original game Red Faction. Red Faction Guerrilla allows players to take the role of Alec Mason, an insurgent fighter who joins the newly re-established Red Faction group as they fight for freedom against the autocratic EDF (Earth Defence Force). As Alec, you can roam free around the open word of Mars, hijacking vehicles, running jumping and using weapons to do battle. Attacks are based on your own gameplay style, you have free reign to decide how, when and where to fight, in order to destabilize the EDF's control on Mars.

The campaign for this game has an average storyline, the classic "oppressive regime followed by uprising", but at the end of the day this doesn't matter, as the gameplay is so immersive. The general plotline is that you have to liberate Mars one sector at a time (out of 6) in order for the Red Faction to find a way through to the next. By destroying things you earn "Scrappage" which can be spent at an upgrade table to purchase new weapons, or improve existing ones. The weapons are all great too, they have a fantastic feel to them in gameplay, which ultimately adds to the overall experience, though I often want to carry more than 4 at once (the game's limit). Whilst the campaign would be short if you only played the story missions, there an abundance of highly enjoyable side-missions - from rescuing hostages to riding "shotgun" with Jenkins, which involves blowing as much stuff up with a mounted rocket launcher as you possibly can whilst he drives. There are also modes which have you timed - Demolition Master and Transporter. In Demolition Master your task is to eradicate a certain building as quickly as possible, using weapons assigned to you by the game (fixed). Transporter entails driving vehicles to a destination in faster than the time limit. Both have a standard completion time and a "Pro" time - which you want to hit for an extra reward. All in all, a very enjoyable campaign.

Online multiplayer is ridiculously fun. The levels are all well thought out, so it is possible to make good tactical and chaotic use of the destructive scenery. It actually adds a fourth dimension to gameplay. Crash through things to hiding enemies, collapse buildings on top of your foes, or hide yourself! Multiplayer also has a new addition - backpacks. These can be picked up and swapped around the map, giving the user a benefit for a short time before having to recharge. Your team's choice of backpack will be all important to victory, as they bring in, as it were, a 5th dimension to gameplay! Heal yourself and teamates with the Heal pack, see enemies through walls with Vision, shake down buildings with Tremor - or just crash through them with Rhino. The Jetpack is also very handy for escapes and the height advantage.

Online offers multiple game types too, from straight death-matches to team, to capture the flag and siege (take turns defending strategic targets). Multiplayer never gets boring.

Offline multiplayer has a mode called "Wrecking Crew" which is pretty much as the name suggests. Create as much destruction in the time limit with the weapons available. Or you can be slightly more tactical, and have limited ammo, which you will have to use strategically to maximise your destruction. This is also great fun when you have friends over.

In conclusion, this game is a joy to play, and well worth the money. There is nothing quite like it on the market.

In my opinion, this game is an excellent return to the sci-fi action genre. Red Faction: Guerrilla provides the ultimate game experience for using guerrilla tactics, I have played no other game that rivals the range of weapons and vehicles and of course the amount of destructible Martian environment. I have rated many games, but I would certainly give this 9/10. The thing standing between this being a 9 and a 10 is that it is layed in 3rd person and I am a lover of 1st person shooters.

    9/10..........5 stars
